VA Creative

4.3

After finishing college, one of my first roles was as a junior programmer building servers and networks for a new company in London. Although I did not continue to pursue a career in IT, I have always had a keen interest in it, and this experience gave me a solid grounding in technology. My work in entertainment retail gave me invaluable experience in customer service. I worked my way from customer service assistant to store manager and had ten people under my care. I worked to create a great team dynamic. My staff were able to come up with innovative ideas, so we were one of the few profitable stores. We built relationships with customers who returned repeatedly because they trusted and valued our service. In 2007, I enrolled in an Access Course at Portsmouth University as a mature student to pursue a bachelor's Degree in Film and Television Production. Four years of study wasn’t easy, especially as I was the oldest in my class or as old as some of the lecturers. I quickly learned to learn new skills while staying self-motivated and juggling a young family and student life. Once I graduated, I wanted to use everything I learned from my degree, and the best way to do that at the time was to create an entertainment brand called The Ruby Tuesday. I have been self-employed as a content creator for many years. I have had to learn editing, filming, presenting, graphic design, Search Engine Optimization and utilising various social media platforms. As a self-employed person, I needed to acquire all the skills necessary to build my brand independently. This meant researching online, finding tutorials, trial and error and creative problem-solving. Now, I approach anything new with the resilience and self-motivation I have gained, knowing I can learn anything I put my mind to. Another aspect of being self-employed has been the need to grow and expand my audience. Part of this has meant building excellent working relationships with large entertainment brands such as Warner Bros, Netflix and Amazon. This and my previous customer service background have given me the confidence to communicate with people from all backgrounds, both in writing and verbally. Being self-employed comes with its challenges. You have to motivate yourself. Every aspect of the job is up to you. This has taught me to prioritise and organise my days, weeks and months for what is needed. While growing my brand, I worked part-time as an administrator and media manager for a charity, Junction 13. This included a variety of administrative duties such as replying to enquiries, maintaining the membership database, graphic design of leaflets, flyers and posters, health and safety documentation and website maintenance. I also prepared the workspace for events, including setting up hospitality and technology for external hires. I am familiar with Windows and MS Office, having used these previously. Still, I have been a Mac user for many years, so I am now more familiar with alternate operating systems and workarounds. My self-motivation, enthusiasm, keen interest in IT, problem-solving, and excellent customer service experience suit me well for transferable skills for almost all VA client requirements. Thank you for your time and consideration.
